Elssa, please,  call those veterinary dentists and make an appointment with one of them. Your baby's mouth needs to be checked by a specialist.

As for distance, over an hour drive is nothing when there is a serious health issue that needs to be taken care of. This is a serious health issue. Also, the mouth needs to be thoroughly examined to make sure the abscess is the only problem and nothing more serious is going on. So please, please, please, take my advice, make an appointment for your baby.

I agree, that HAS to hurt! And I know so many kitties that had some kind of dental work done and ate and felt 100% right afterwards.

Well, my vet who found the abscess has listed on his web site that he offers a "full dental service" and is the only accredited vet in the area.  When I took Gwen in for a checkup and he found the abscess, he said he wanted to wait until she was more well and eating better to address that gum problem, and wanted to deal with the gallstones and kidney problems first, and my on-line vet agreed, so that's what we're doing now.  That local vet who found the abscess also gave her a shot of antibiotics and prescribed antibiotics for me to give her (amoxicillin and Flagyl), so maybe that helped, hopefully.

On a positive note, Gwen loved the Fancy Feast Tender Beef and Chicken Feast (grain free) i got for her today.

The Pepcid continues to help, so thanks again. :)

I can only repeat, in Gwen's best interest, you need to go to a veterinary dentist with this.

An abscess is something that doesn't go away and temporary measures don't solve the problem. With every day that goes by the potential for very serious complications gets worse. I mean, increases. So, taking care of this by going to the most highly qualified professional and a place where procedures to keep older kitties safe are well worked out and in place is of utmost importance.

I'm very troubled by this situation. Having had 16, 17 year olds in to take care of dental problems that would've become life-threatening I don't understand the reluctance here. I really don't.  And I can't help being worried and concerned.

Gwen continues to have a great appetite, is eating all the pate cat food without any problem, and just had another perfect poop, not even loose, so she's doing fine.  I feel like she's her old self since starting on that Pepcid.  I will call the local vet, though, and ask if now that she's stronger he wants to address the abscess (if it's still there after all the antibiotics she's been on).  I trust that he has the experience to deal with it.My on-line vet, who has 39 years' experience, assured me this local vet could treat an abscess.  I am not going to subject poor Gwen to a 2-hour car trip. Thank you for your concern.

My local vet's training and services:

Dr. ___ ____ PhD, DVM, MRCVS  has over 20 years experience. Our facilities provide an on site laboratory, digital x-rays, orthopedic surgery, arthroscopy, endoscopy and full dental service. The only NYS Accredited Animal Hospital in this Area. Housecalls and Emergency Services available for our clients.

Not sure anyone ever answered your question as to whether or not Soulistic if pate or not.  It is NOT, but with you new Food Processor, you can make turn it into pate.  But it's only sold at Petco.  Do you have a Petco near you?  If so, then you have access to other grain free foods as well, most of them already pate.  Gosh, I had no idea Fancy Feast made a grain free food!   I'm glad she's eating well for you.  Maybe if you keep it up, your vet will take care of that abscess, since he just wanted her to be in better shape before he did it, right?
