This is one of the 'totes' mentioned.
I use 3, 14gal. Rubbermaid Roughnecks, and I cut out a small entrance, but keep the lids off, I buy them at Lowes and pay about $7 each.

My placement situation is kind of unique as I live in a travel trailer and I have to place them out of the dog's reach (another tootsie-roll snacker).
My solution is under my couch, accessed through a cargo hatch from outside.
The cats get to them through a series of kitty holes cut into my indoor bench storage.

We never used a covered litter box until we got a dog. Now it's a necessity and the kitties don't seem to mind. Plus the dog can no longer snack on gourmet treats!

Keep it scrupulously clean, cat is in and out, and it works great

Don't clean it often enough, contains the stink, yuck!
So it is all in how you use it.
We like it here

I forgot to say--I removed the flap from mine too. I was going to try to put it back but I didn't want to rock Gigi's world
It is working just fine as is! Sometimes the dogs still beat me to it (Gi seems to decide to do #2 just as I am fixing a plate!!), but the lid slows 'em down somewhat still. It contains the litter and looks nicer and again when kept scrupulously clean it really doesn't get "bad" in there

I just took the cover off and chucked it away and still use the bases.

I just don't have the time to be scrubbing huge covered boxes every few days. I like to soak mine in hot water.
