That's the tough part, there isn't an accurate test and I asked my vet why so many seem to be dying of FIP lately and she says not to jump the gun on that. Just like IBD, FIP is a diagnosis that is sometimes turned to when there isn't an answer but the signs point to it. I've seen parents have a necropsy done and still not be able to pinpoint it if was FIP or not.

The Specialist confirmed that Wendall has asthma. He has no heart problems, no murmer and everything else has checked out just fine. The odd thing is that I just decided about a week ago to start him on L-Lysine - 250 mg. twice daily. So far this whole week there has been no more morning gurgling or coughing. I have no idea if that is just a coincidence or not. Doc said to then just keep him on the L-Lysine for a couple more weeks and let's see what happens. Then take him off of it. Since he has a more mild case (so far) of the asthma, we will not treat with Pred., yet. But that will be the protocol for his asthma down the road if needed. As he ages, it could become worse or he could have asthmatic episodes and would need oxygen or an inhaler immediately. We will take it day by day. So far he is doing really, really well this past week.
KNOCK WOOD :lol3: He is such a special little character and brings me such happiness each day. He loves life, loves to eat, loves to be involved in everything I am doing, and just loves him momma. I love him dearly too :heart3: Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts for Wendall. :hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs:

Well, I'm sorry he's got asthma, but at least it's not bad enough that he needs to go on medication right away, so that's good.  Maybe you've stumbled onto something with the L-Lysine!
that he won't need anything else for a VERY LONG time, if ever

Feralvr, I just read through this thread and am so happy at the outcome.

Wendall is a lucky boy to have you, and I'm sure you feel lucky to have his sweet self in your life.

They are like gifts, these innocent children, my Krissy was sent from the skies and brought me smiles and love in a dark time of my life, I know how deep in my heart she is, so precious to me, same as your baby.

The diagnosis isn't bad, since we all know it could have been so so much worse. Asthma is do-able, treatable, and that is just okay, as I'm sure you feel some relief knowing now what you have been holding your breathe to know, as lots of others here with their support and kind words.

Just wanted to say how good it is to hear things will be okay!

:yeah: to both! I'm SO sorry Wendall's got asthma. :( But FINALLY you know what the problem is, and he seems to be doing really well!   Maybe it'll just be a problem seasonally, and never develop further. :cross: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:

Thank you all, so very much!!!! :hugs::hugs::hugs: Your kind words just warm my heart :heart3: and Wendall happens to be sitting right next to me here tonight so I read him your replies ..... I think he understands though :D :clap: I appreciate all of you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :winkblue:

p.s. I cannot believe this... could it be the Lysine :dk: Still no coughing or gurgling..... Will keep him on the Lysine for awhile, no reason to stop just to see what happens. It won't hurt him to be on it. Perla and Pipsqueak get Lysine everyday, so will just add Wendall to the list!

UPDATE - new xrays today. and, OH goodness, have not checked his thread in almost a year! Thanks for asking girls. :hugs: :hugs:

Took Wendall to the new vet since we recently moved after Christmas. His cough is about the same only more congested sounding. The episodes are not coming any more nor are they less. About the same, holding steady this last year. Still a huge concern for me when I hear my little man with that awful sounding congested cough.

Vet took xrays today. Compared to last years. She showed me the comparisons and they were apparent. More "haze" in the lungs and a few spots that were not there last year. The disease is progressing. No ultrasound is recommended because she feels this is an inflammatory disease and the heart has no murmur. In fact, she told me that most heart issues with cats do not involved coughs as many think. So the heart thing was a relief. The other worry is that he has some red inflammed spots on the back part of his mouth behind his back molars on the gums. Very beginnings of Stomatis? Which would go along with an inflammatory disease issue. We are going to watch that very carefully. Made me quite concerned. :sigh:

We are going to start him on Prednisone. 2.5 mg. for three days. Then twice weekly. She wants to start to treat now as this might help slow the progression and damage. There is another drug (and left the paper the car so will update the name later) that we can try. But Pred is a good starting place for this. There is also the nebulizer but Wendall is not anywhere near needing that yet. :cross: hopefully never. :cross:

He was such a good boy all the way there, during his visit, for his xray and for the ride home. Not a peep. :heart3: When we got home he came out of the carrier and looked around and was SO HAPPY!!! Tail up and purring!!! :rub: Of course, momma gave him his favorite Lean Treats and loads of kisses  :rub: He really is a very funny little man. So how about some pictures. :pix: :clap::clap:

Me and my bro, Walden, who sleeps a lot.
I love my brother, Walden.
PLAY with me momma!!!

Oh Lauren, those are SUCH precious photos!!!!  I LOVE that last one! :lol3: :D

I'm so sorry to hear the disease is progressing. :( I'm SURE the pred will help. But YES - such a relief to have it confirmed this is "asthma" and not a heart problem! One thing is for sure: we know he's in the best care possible. :heart2:

Vibes for your beautiful little man! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Well, now I have myself all worked up over the "stomatitis" findings in the back of his mouth. Of course, Internet Vet, that's me. I looked at all of my other babies mouths and they were not happy with momma. No one has those red spots. My poor little man. Asthma and the beginnings of Stomatitis. How can this be?? I am angry at the same time as I am worried. Should I start a new thread asking for a correlation between Asthma and Stomatitis. Could my little man have an auto-immune inflammatory disease. He in only two and a half years old with such a cruel and abusive start in life. I want each and everyday to be special for him and that is my goal and priority. He is really a special kitty to me. He follows me everywhere. He is into everything I am doing. He loves water and always comes running when I use any faucet. He has short stubby legs so when he walks or trots, he has a long stride - just such a cute kitty mover. :lol3: He curls up at my side each night and snuggles with me all night. Also, Wendall has finally given up on the Perla Teasings. :nono: He is such a little stinker with such a zest for life. He does not play with wand toys ....... get this........ he only goes after the SHADOW the wand toy makes on the floor and walls. :flail:

I am also worried because he did lose some weight. He went from 13.4 pounds to 12.2 pounds this last year but he was bordering fat then. I think he looks good. The vet just wants to keep a watch on his weight. She also commented on how plush and soft his coat is!! It is all of that raw food he is eating. She said he probably lost weight because of not eating carbs. I can't help but be a bit taken back and confused as to HOW much worrying I should be doing.

What about starting him on the Evening Primrose? 500 mg. per day? for the asthma.

I think momma is getting the worst end of the stick on this one, so I am not going to say poor little baby..... I am going to say poor momma :rub:

I see some good news that you might be worrying about it instead of celebrating - of course we do that :lol3:
First of all..... Of course he lost weight! He dropped so many carbs, you cut off kibbles, you put him on a schedule feeding, and I don't know now, but for quite a while he ate raw. That is to be celebrated - when you firt took him in he was bloated and fat - now he is not. He has a healthier weight that will probably make him live longer, with a better quality of life
Had you not made all those changes, sure..... and probably most of your vet's patients don't do all the improvements in diet you made, so that weight loss WITH NO DIET CHANGE will raise a red flag.
Bugsy lost 5lbs this last year. Can you imagine the shock in his chart if I don't explain veeeeery well when Bugsy gets there sick?

Also - Thank goodness it is not heart. Cough when related to heart disease can be a sign of congested heart failure and that is a devastating disease. Sounds like his asthma is not that advanced either and can be controlled :cross: as the pred dosage is tiny itty bitty

#3 - If that is stomatitis, and I would take him to a dentist before making that assumption, it is also veeeeeery in the begining if it is only shown on the back of the mouth around his molars.
The very very best diet you can give to any inflammatory disease is raw, IMHO. With raw, this low dose of pred (for asthma) and regular dentals, I am pretty confident he will do just fine
Again, I have not seen his mouth..... But for the sounds of it the inflammation is very very small Lauren....

Like others said, he couldn't be in better hands :hugs: You are super momma...... Just try to take one step at a time.... He will be fine - take care of his momma so his momma can take good care of him :hugs: :hugs: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

I agree--mommy is more worried than Wendall.  Wendall knows he is in loving, good hands.

Glad it's "just" asthma.  And glad Wendall is already on raw.

Vibes for you, Mommy.

OK - so today I am more rational about his conditions. And, after reading this, I feel even better. YES - Wendall is still eating 100% raw food. He also eats raw fresh chicken/turkey breast/thigh a few times a week as well as his most favorite, the HT duck hearts. He is quite the chewer of these meats so that is why his teeth/gums look so good - other than those spots in back. He and Walden from day one have taken to the raw diet immediately. Going strong now for well over a year. Absolutely that would attribute the more lean/fit/muscled look about Wendall. He looks great. I am getting pictures with my digital and will post. :pix:

Second point, and right again. Thank God it is not his heart. The asthma is quite mild because he does not wheeze at this point in the disease. It is mostly those congested coughs first thing in the morning. NOW after three days on 2.5 mg. Pred, I have not heard one raspy cough. Although, there are days he will go without coughing but I am certain the Pred. will assist in any inflammation in those lungs. Will go to twice weekly from here on the Pred. 25 mg/2xweek. I will report back here with any good news and hopefully the report will be NO MORE CONGESTED COUGHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cross: :cross: :cross:

Thirdly, the veeeeeeery teeeeeeeeny red dots are on the upper back part of his gums just behind/above the back top molars and towards the roof of his mouth actually. There are about three or four on each side and they are symmetrical. If I took a picture (if he would let me) I think you would be .... what/where are the spots. HMMM, I wonder, might that just be his "normal" mouth. But yeah, I am chilling out :chillpill: completely. Will regularly check his mouth for any changes. If I see spreading or swelling (which there is none now) I will take him back to the vet to discuss.

Thank you, Carolina. :hugs: :hugs: Feeling happy today!! :D :high5:
