Our cat who has history of pancreatitis and possible IBD (on prednisolone, very low dosage) was seen in ED for constipation. He had an IV and started pooping all night. They sent him home on lactulose. After a day and a half he started diarrhea and a vomit. We took him back, they did an ultrasound, show some colitis and gastritis which they said probably a result if diarrhea? Sent home on metronidazole and increased his pred.

They wanted us to change his diet to a select protein (we changed his wet and his get a bit of dry, so changed that too). We did and they said since on all these meds just to start with new food, no transition. He's been eating it great for about 6 days. Perfect poops.

Today he just had a very soft poop. How could this happen while also on day 6 of metronidazole? Could it still be from the food change?

Well, it's really hard to say what might be causing it. Believe it or not, diarrhea can actually be a side of effect of Metro, even though it's usually given for that very reason :sigh:. Of course, you probably know that if he really does have IBD, dry food is not good for him and could also be contributing to the problem. Is he getting Vit. B supplementation?

Yes, thanks, we know all about IBD. His previous ultrasounds have been all normal and he never has bowel issues outside of very rare constipation - they just always say IBD is possible because he has chronic pancreatitis. And now because this latest ultrasound showed colitis (which I still think is from the lactulose - it gave him diarrhea) they strongly suggested a food switch.
Not sure why they gave him metro as he has no infection and no pancreatitis at moment. Metro also wouldn't stop diarrhea from a food change, right?

Can a food change cause diarrhea after 6 days? it seems very long, like it would have showed up earlier.

I'm calling vet tomorrow, but was so saddened to see the loose stool tonight. The switch was going so well.
