Picks the carpet!

Our house is primarily tile and wood floors. Two of the bedrooms are carpeted. Our Maine Coon spends most of his time sleeping right outside the patio slider with the kitty door. Although he has miles of sand (we live in the desert) he comes inside to use the litter box. But the main problem is he occasionally throws up but runs into the house to use  a part of our bedroom rug. Any suggestions?

I wish I had some!  Both of mine seem to search out the carpet if they have a hairball or something. Occasionally I can slip some newspaper or ads from the mail under them in time if I'm there at just the right moment.  I don't want to scare them running at them though.
