We used to change ours every few weeks when we had the Petmate. I do remember that it did not last a month.

I stopped using filters in the Drinkwell. I use filtered water from a Pur pitcher and completely wash it out every week.

actually, i stopped using the filters. one of my cats has herpes, so i put Lysine in their water. i didn't want the filters to 'filter' it out, so i stopped using them. i have to clean out the pump more often, due to hair, but that's the only difference i've noticed.
however, i have good water. if you live in an area w/poor tap water, you might want to either use the filter or bottled water.

we have a Drinkwell and a Freshflow, the Mau and the kittens love to play in the Drinkwell ; )
