I've now seen this enough times to be sure of it. The pepcid ac takes ten minutes to work.
This morning, after her second breakfast portion, Mazy showed signs of feeling urpy. While I know the pepcid makes her feel better, it has it's own drawbacks and I don't want to use it every day. So I have other tricks I try first.
She does get a dose every 4 days (with first meal of the morning) on a routine basis, that regimen is based on many weeks of watching her patterns. But sometimes she needs extra help.
Sometimes she just needs to be distracted until the food settles and she brings the burp up. Distracting her with play will work, on occasion. She avoided the Game this morning though so I knew she needed stronger measures.
My next trick is to shut her in the bathroom for a few minutes. This way 1) if she pukes, it is contained on a washable floor or 2) her efforts to release herself distracts her enough she forgets about hurling. This often is an effective method. It takes her about two minutes to get the door open, if I stick a slipper under it to hold it closed. That two minutes can give her enough distraction to forget about the urge to hurl. Often Queen Eva either plays footsies with her outside the door, or goes in with her. This morning Queen Eva kept her company and it sounded like they had a good romp in there before working on pushing the door open.
So, she came out and seemed okay. Whew. But after the third breakfast serving, (each meal is half hour apart) she again had that hunched "my tummy hurts" look. My last effort before pepcid ac is catnip. Catnip is good for indigestion. I gave her a nice fat bud (the other two had some too). This really seemed to perk her up. I have all the windows open as usual when doing housework on Sunday morning and they all dashed around from window to window and started a wild Chase Me Chase You Game and she seemed to be having a good time.
Another hour went by and I noticed Mazy again sitting with that hunched "my tummy hurts" look. So..even though I helped her keep her food down, she still wasn't feeling better so I had to go with the pepcid ac (1/4 of a ten mg tablet)
To give her pepcid at a time other than the every four day right before a first meal routine, I use PureBites freeze dried chicken treats. I give her a piece, then mash the pepcid into the next piece and she eats it right up, then I give her another to 'wash' it all down. They all gathered round and we had a bit of a Chase The Treat Game, since I haven't vacuumed yet anyway.
Exactly 10 minutes later, just like I have observed other times, Mazy clearly felt all better. Her eyes got brighter, her face lost it's pinched look and she stopped hunching.
I supposed I could just use the pepcid at the first sign of trouble, but those other methods do work sometimes, so I like to avoid it if I can.
Two of the main side effects of regular pepcid use are constipation and Vitamin B-12 depletion (it blocks the absorption of B-12) Mazy takes a B complex supplement daily so I don't worry too much about that any more. Her diet improvements eliminated the constipation problems she was having before, but I have seen some evidence of it returning, if she takes pepcid for more than three days in a row, and of course constipation brings it's own host of problems.
Now, what I do when she has to have an extra pepcid dose is start the four day count from the day of the extra again. I'm glad it helps her feel better....but I will always try the other ways first.
Ohhhh yes, she is feeling so much better now.....zzzooommm, there she goes!!!
