Panting kitten - cause for worry?

My ChooChoo is 5 months old and like all kittens he is a bundle of energy. However, for a couple of days I notice that he is panting heavily after even a brief play time. Initially I thought he was angry, because from a distance you can only see that his mouth was open but today he did that after running towards me and I could hear him breathe heavily with the mouth open, like we see in dogs.

Is this normal in cats?

If it's very hot out or the cat has played very hard for a long time, some panting is normal. But not after playing for just a short time. . .I think he needs to see the vet. Be sure to tell the vet he's panting--they may not think to look for problems in such a young kitty.

I want to add - longhaired do pants more often than shorthaired - as they do get warm quicker, IF they are running and playing much.

Here it sounds something is not OK... And it did apparently come on quickly.
I agree, it is an ASAP vet visit. Phone first if you wish, but hurry.

because this is something new...
Choo Choo needs to see a vet, to rule out a health issue.
I would do this right away.
