It started as a 1950's type thing, but went into the 60's and early 70's too. We had "Sock Hops" when I was in grade 6, 7 and 8, which was the early 70's.

Our Principal used to call off class for the last two periods so we could have a Sock Hop. He'd bring in a DJ and let us dance. It was so fun.
BTW, I graduated from high school in 1997, so this was ten or eleven years ago.
I'm still salty about the music I listened to being considered "classic" rock.
I'll do you one better, I know every lyric from the welcome to my nightmare album including the monlogue by vincent price for the single Black Widow.
Um...I just saw Alice Cooper play on Tuesday. It was the Gallows this time. (I saw the Electric Chair back in the 90s, but never did get to see the Guillotine.)
