Explaining that your MIL wasn't aware that the pups weren't ready and asking the couple to bring it back to spend a couple more weeks with its mom is not wrong and should feel about as nonconfrontational as you can get. Don't be afraid! The worst they can say is no, and they might even be surprised and upset and bring it right back.

If that doesn't work, you can take other measures, but the pup belongs with its mom, and the sooner it's returned the better.

No need to get upset at anyone, I'm sure your MIL didn't mean any harm and just didn't realise the puppies needed more time with their mum.

Just call the person who took them and just say it's in the puppy's best interest to stay with you a bit longer since they aren't fully weaned. And please do it ASAP before the puppy gets too settled, and before the mum gets too used to the puppy not being there.

Are you spay and neutering the pups before they go to their new homes?
