I say do whatever makes you happy. The fact that some don't like you using the hammer smilie isn't your problem, it's theirs and they are the ones that need to deal with it, not you. If they really don't like seeing the hammer smilie in your posts, they have options: (1) don't read your posts (2) don't open a thread you start (3) put you on their ignore and it's a done deal.
I can't believe how bent out of shape some people get over something so small like a smilie on a discussion board.
Anyway, do what makes you happy and don't stress yourself over it. You can't change what some people say or do, all you can do is change how you react to it.
