Received an email last week about a family who was having fits with a feral they had just adopted. He was becoming confrontational when he saw their hands, or when they opened a window. They were at their wits end and wanted to know what to do.
I wrote back and told them to hide their hands from this kitty, because chances were strong that he had been hit before, and I gave them some other ideas as well.
I just got this reply. I am so glad when people start listening to their cats instead of expecting a feral to behave like a domestic breed, it just won't work if you think that way.
My name is Debbie and you recently returned an e-mail to my husband
Rob, regarding our adoption of a male feral cat. Your suggestions about
how to handle him were excellent. I've already made great strides by
hiding my hands, playing classical music and avoiding direct eye
contact. It's really quite amazing how much progress he has made!!!!
He's much more trusting and friendly. Last night he sat next to me on
the couch and purred and purred. Again, thanks for the great advice and
for responding to us so quickly. He really is a sweetheart and I hope
more people take the time to adopt a feral cat. They have so much too
offer and it just takes a little bit more effort and a little bit of
patience. But, the return is well worth it!! My husband and I, and our
new friend thank you.
Sincerely,
Debbie
