Why wouldn't they be? A huge noise coming out of nowhere naturally startles them, and then they can't determine the source of the din as it continues.
None of my cats are bothered by thunderstorms, but one my dogs hates them! My oldest daughter was terrified of thunderstorms when she was a baby. Guess no matter what the species, loud noises are scary to some, others not so much!
