non-clumping clay litter

It seems like most shelters by me use this or ask for this type of litter to be donated. Why is that? Wouldn't clumping litter last longer? Is the non-clumping stuff just cheaper and that's why it's used?

(The other shelter I know of uses the pellets)

For kittens who have bouts of diarrhea, clumping litter will just become cement on their fur. Nonclumping might stick but not get glued onto the fur.

I second the above...I volunteer at a local shelter and kittens and diarrhea go "paw in paw"
Adult shelter cats have frequent loose stools, too....I chalk it up to stress. A long haired cat+diarrhea+clumping litter=a pain in the rear!
