Newly Adopted Cat Skittish

I recently adopted a cat 2 weeks ago and I did the right thing by keeping him in a separate room from my resident cat. I would open the doors when my other cat would be sleeping in the other room and the new one came out and explored but now when I try that I can't get him to leave the room

rubysmama gave you ALL of the links I was thinking of, so I'll just add that two weeks really isn't very long in terms of a cat, especially a shyer cat, getting used to a new home, and being comfortable being out and about. Just be patient, you're doing it right!
