hi, my names Maya. i live in bradenton to florida w/my husband of 26yrs and 2 daughters and one granddaughter. we have 5 dogs, 4 parrots and now a kitten. my oldest daughter had a "friend" who moved away and abandoned her kitten in the apartment when she left. my daughter tried to take care of the kitten but she works 2 jobs and has 2 dogs and does not like cats. she tried her best, then decided to find a cat person to take the cat. down here craig's list is just boiling w/cats and kittens free for the taking, so there was just no one who wanted a plain black kitten. this went on for 2wks, and it was getting down to the big decision, keep him and be miserable, or turn into the shelter. EVERYONE knows what happens to cats, black ones especially, in shelters, they don't usually make it out.
she called me crying, not knowing what to do. we've worked in canine and parrot rescue all my kids lives, nearly 25yrs now. so we know the drill w/abandonments, strays, black animals and shelters. so i told her to try for a few more days and if nothing turned up she could bring him to my house. i've NEVER had a cat as an adult. we always had strays hanging around when i was kid, but i've never kept cats because my husband never liked them. but he said he wanted to help out this cat because he "didn't want the shelter to murder any more of these little critters". lol, he's got the wrong idea, but the right feeling. so last evening i got everything i needed to together and went and got this kitten. now here is my issue.
as far as we know, he has been fed dog food for most if not all his kittenhood, he's pretty hefty for a kitten, even tho he still has his milk teeth we do not know how old he is, he appears to be quite healthy, has a good appetite, no smelly waste, gets along very well w/dogs, has good energy, no URI symptoms, and by all appearances seems to be a good specimen. what i'd really like to know, is how do i figure out his age?
oh, and THANX for SUCH an informative site! i've been lurking here since last evening and already have learned an immense amount of information. i didn't realize there was so much to know about such a little critter.
