well, my name is Amy and I have been an animal lover all my life (genetics! gotta love them!).
It all started when I was a little girl. It seemed like there were not enough pets around (sarcasm here). My mother would rescue cats and dogs and livestock like it was a hobby! I think I can count over a hundred dogs and cats alone that she has rescued and either kept for herself or found really good homes for them. At one point, when I was 14, she had 6 dogs and 5 cats! Not to mention the cow, horse, potbellied pig, rabbits, guinea pigs, and billy goats she had rescued from the animal shelter! LoL! I guess you can say it was definetely a zoo at my house growing up. Well, anyway, I swore up and down I would never do what she did...it seemed so overwhelming!
Then, my first year in the military, I decided to take a trip back home to visit my folks. What do I do on my way? Pick up a pack of coon dogs that were running up and down the road. They looked like they were in search of the car that had dropped them off. Every car that would drive by they would look at it....attempt to go towards it and then back off as if they saw it was not the one. So, I pulled over, and opened my door. I didn't even get a chance to get out...they came and darted into my car!! LOL I had 3 dogs in my car! So, I get to my mom's house and sit in the driveway...didn't want to get out of the car. She comes out and comes up to my window and asks whats wrong...then sees these three dogs panting and bouncing around the back seat and she just starts laughing. "I thought you said you would never take after me????" I said "Oh well, can't help whats in your blood!"
Anyways, that was the start of my animal rescues. I have since rescued a little hound dog, and three cats. I found Sandy (the dog) on the side of the road by my folks house in Alabama. She was only about 10 weeks old and covered in fleas and ticks. I took her straight to my moms vet (of course---we run a tab!) and got her cleaned up and got her all her shots. Shes now just a little over a year old. I recently had to give her away because I am moving because of the military. But, she went to a great family who has already bonded really well with her.
My three cats are Kara (solid black domestic short hair), whose extremely introverted. Took me a very long time to get her to be friendly with me. She does the weirdest thing though now. I walk into the bathroom and she comes RUNNING down the hall and keeps me company while I am on the toilet! LOL! Weird cat...very weird. Problem is, the other cats have noticed this and have since started doing the very same thing lol. It took me a very long time though to get her to know I was a gentle person. She would always hide and wouldn't come out unless NO ONE was around. She would hide in kitchen cabinets, dresser drawers, under the bed, in the closet, and under the bathroom sink. Never failed, if I started searching for her in the house, I would find her in one of those places.
Pooh is a solid white domestic short hair who meows so loud and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG winded too!! I have to either get him to be asleep before I go to bed or put him out in the house and close the bedroom door or else I will never sleep.
And then there is Boo. Hes a domestic short hair with what seems like tiger stripes on his back but white everywhere else. Hes a sweetheart but very skiddish. You walk towards him to pet him and he walks sideways and away from you with his back arched like he wants you to pet him but isnt quite sure yet lol. But hes nice enough
Well, thats my story lol.
