I have a 8 month female spayed 7 days ago. I also have her brother who is in heat. Both were ferals but are inside now. He is trying to mount her which she hisses. Should I separate them especially when I am not home and sleeping? I don't want him hurting her.

Hi Madams, welcome to The Cat Site.

Male cats don't go into heat, they're just ready for action whenever a female happens to be around. They'll try with spayed and unspayed females and even with other males sometimes.

Yes, keep them separate so he doesn't hurt her. If her surgery was only a week ago she must still be a bit sore. The best thing to do is get him fixed as soon as you can. Mounting can be a dominance thing, but if he's not fixed yet it's more likely to be his hormones causing the problem.

I'm taking him Monday or Tuesday to my vet! He started this only a few days ago. I don't want my female to get hurt.

Thanks for your response. It really helped. Love your website! Glad I found it.

You'll find that his surgery will be much easier and he will heal much faster then the female. Their hormones also take at least 30 days to leave their system, so don't be surprised if they still display some of the above behaviors. Your little female should put on her 'diva' behavior pretty soon, usually around a year old. She'll be bossing him around in no time! Welcome to the site, and keep us posted!
