I feel like the spay/neuter recommendations are changing in regard to ideal age. Our vet is saying for a male kitten to be at least 6 months old. Anyone have any further insight/recent data?
Thanks!
I feel like this is one of those topics where people will have studies, stories, etc on both sides. Shelters/rescues have to spay/neuter before they adopt out, so that is often around 2lbs of weight or 8-10 wks depending. Obviously, they do that because kittens are highly desired but have to be fixed. I had a cat that I waited until about 6 months. I did that only because all other cats in the house were fixed and there was zero chance of him getting outside (lived in enclosed upper level apartment at the time). If there is any risk of your cat escaping (even if you think he/she wouldn't) then do it sooner than later in my opinion. Too many people have "oopsie" litters. They can be sexually mature around that 6 month mark. I think it's really up to you and your vet though.
