My 4.5 month old kitten Luna is having some potty problems and the vet can't figure out why.
Some history. I have had Luna and her brother Maroo for about 2 months and I feel like their poops have always been very smelly, soft but formed, and a really really dark green color. I didn't realize this was not normal until recently. My vet says they should be brown and not have a very strong smell. Also, 2x about a month ago I noticed there was pee outside the litter box. Didn't know which cat was the culprit and it stopped so I didn't pay it much attention. Then, Luna recently (about a week ago) passed a stretchy string that I pulled out from her rear. After Googling I realized this can be extremely dangerous. This is what prompted our recent series of vet visits.
I took her in and let them know about the string and poop issues. They said to keep an eye on her and start her on fortiflora to see if that will help. Both babies were given their last round of FVRCP that day and we went home. Doc said exam was normal so no immediate concerns. The next day I saw Luna in the litter box and lift her butt in the air, kind of like downward dog pose, and pee ends up outside of the litter box. She will twitch a little bit then get out. Basically straining/discomfit while trying to urinate.
I took her back to the vet right away and they did a fecal and urine analysis and came up with nothing. Don't see signs of swelling or blockage. She is on a pain medication (Buprenorphine) and antibiotic (metronidazole)"just in case" and to see if it changes any of her symptoms. I do not like this approach because I know there are risks with medication so I would rather know the cause before giving her anything. However, I am not the vet and they seem to think this is the next best step. The next step will probably be switching her food to see if that helps.
Has anyone else had this experience? It is very troubling to me because she is very young and that the vet can't pinpoint a cause.
Thanks in advance!
