Years ago, some inmates where I work found a newborn kitten in the prison yard. No sign of mom or any other kittens. The inmates tried to give it milk, but with limited resources, weren't having much luck. They begged me to take it home, but I had several cats already and knew I couldn't. (Though I was trying, in the back of my mind, to think of what I could do if no staff member wanted it.) I felt so helpless. Most of the people I work with don't like cats and the people running the show would have called animal control.
Well, there was an instructor from the college who was there to teach Human Resources or GED classes. She agreed to take the kitten home. She quit teaching at the prison soon afterward, but the last I'd heard the kitten was doing well. I remember she said it slept in the bed and liked "making biscuits"
. I'd never heard kneading called that before.
For some reason, I was thinking about that kitten just last night. And would you believe I ran into the teacher at a thrift store today? She said that she still has the kitten, her name is Fred, and she's 10 years old now. She said that Fred is her four-legged child and is in love with her DH to the point that it is almost sickening
. I couldn't believe it...I haven't seen this woman in 10 years and was excited to hear that the almost doomed kitten ended up with a happy forever home.
(And had I brought it home, the kitten would have fallen for my DH and ignored me...because that's kind of how it goes here, too.)
