Hello, all! I’m having issues with my British Shorthair scratching my new furniture after recently moving a week ago.
She’s usually very well behaved, but since the move, she’s been periodically scratching the new furniture instead of her cat tree when she wants to stretch. It’s random during the day, and she won’t scratch the tree anymore at all. I’ve had the tree since getting her and she used to scratch on it all the time. She’ll still sit and nap on it, but when she wants to stretch, she heads right to the new furniture. It should be noted that the cat tree and the furniture she's scratching is all in the same room. When I first moved into this apartment, she was very skittish and would not come out of her cat tree. She was afraid of being in a new place.
Some info on her: She’s just shy of a year old, fixed this past June, and typically very well behaved. I’ve had her for almost her whole life, and she was with me for my last apartment move in May, but had no issues with adjusting to the second apartment. However, this move (her now third apartment with me), I bought a new couch and desk chair as the apartment is about three times larger than her first and second homes. She is still very affectionate with me, too.
I live alone, so it’s impossible for me to do anything about her scratching the furniture while I’m at work. The sooner I can stop this behavior, the better. As I mentioned, this is all new furniture and don’t want it ruined already. I am also planning on buying a new additional cat tree for the bed room.
I’m worried she’s having trouble adjusting to the new apartment and am not sure what to do. Any and all insight would be very appreciated. Thanks for your time!
