I haven't seen my old boy Larry for 4 days now. Larry's mom showed up at my house with 3 kittens in the spring of 1994, dropped them off and left. I caught Larry when he was young, had him neutered, but was never able to tame him.
When he was younger (age 3-6 years), he used to wander off for long periods of time - one time for about 18 months and other times for a few months at a time. He was extremely cross eyed (we called him "Cross Eyed Larry" for those that appreciate Jethro Tull) and knew that his vision was not the best. When he hit about 6 years old, we were not surprised to find that he decided that living near the relative safety of our house was better for him. He lived mainly under the front porch and would come out to eat and sun himself. He rarely hunted as I don't think he could see that well to hunt.
In the 11 years that I've known him, he only allowed me to touch him since last fall when another long time feral (Blackie) crossed. After that, he would allow a few pets here and there in the morning when I came out to feed them. Other than that he was a true feral cat with no human contact his entire life.
I've searched the area for him and have not found him. He stuck so close to home for the last 6 years that I know in my heart that he has crossed. The winter was harder on him than past years and he had been losing weight and his coat was not as thick and shiny as it had in the past. Last month my husband and I discussed that Larry's time may be coming this year.
I wish I had a better picture of Larry's eyes. People who actually saw him always asked if he was part siamese since they were so crossed. Here's a picture of my boy. I can only hope that he crossed in peace like Blackie did last fall.
RIP my Cross Eyed Larry boy. We had a good 11 years together!
