my cat will pee in his litter box, but not poop there

My 8-year-old cat seemed to adapt well to a new kind of litter.   But now he will pee there, but poops in the bathtub.    Complication:    I have 2 cats and 2 littler boxes.   Is it possible that one cat has  taken over both boxes?   But I never find pee in the bathtub, so I think it can't be that.   Thoughts?

Depending on the litter, he may not like to poop in it. I had one cat who would poop in her box when we changed the litter type, but not pee. I would try switching back to the old litter for a bit and see if it solves the problem.

If not, you can try adding a third litter box. Usually the recommendation is to have one box for each cat, plus one.
