Rick had a union meeting last night so I got home before he did. Walked in the house and the gate that we keep at the top of the steps was moved. Not down on the floor, but moved over to in front of the piano. I thought, "Well, that's odd." but figured that maybe I didn't put the gate in place before I left for work. (But I knew I did....keep reading.)
Went to the kitchen and dumped my stuff on the kitchen table. Opened the living room drapes (we keep them closed in a vain attempt to keep The Beast at a low roar when we come home). Went back to the computer room and opened the door to let Muffin out. Went into the bedroom to change into sweats and stopped dead. Somebody had been in the bedroom. There was a very faint, but definite smell of cologne or aftershave or something in the bedroom. Why I noticed it in the bedroom, but not in the rest of the house is beyond me, but I could really smell it there.
I took The Beast out to pee and we came back into the house, just as Dear Richard was driving up the driveway. I met him at the top of the steps and told him to follow me. We went back to the bedroom....he could smell something very very faint, but he had no idea what it was. I could still smell it. He has some bad sinus problems, so it's difficult for him to catch odors unless they're really strong.
Came out to the kitchen and we were trying to figure out who all had keys to the house. Our son, of course, and my sister. And the pet-sitter. That's it. Three keys.
But this is not the first time this has happened. Rick has come home and asked me why I didn't put the gate across the top of the steps and I know I did. I know I did. It got so bad there for a while that when I put the gate across the steps, I would actually stop and text Rick "Gate is at the steps" just because. Sure enough, he'd come home and the gate would be over by the piano.
But that smell yesterday was just so weird. It caught me right away, as soon as I walked into the bedroom.
I think we're going to change the locks on the doors. But we still have to give a new key to the pet-sitters and to my sister as she also keeps an eye on the cats.
