What is that purple tree? Again, the colours are so pretty it really stands out. Also, is that ALL lemonbalm by that fence on the left?Originally Posted by rapunzel47
Gilly - that one's a California Lilac and should be bursting out into beautiful purple/blue flowers in a week or twoOriginally Posted by Gilly
Lastly, another tree and atm, I can't remember the name but I took this close up as I am waiting for them to bloom (I have 4 of these in the garden and this will be the first time they have bloomed since I planted them last year)

Actually, that one is quite large, and is probably 40+ years old. I'm pretty sure it was part of the original landscaping, much of which went through a probably longish patch of neglect, so many things that would ordinarily be small or moderate size have grown quite large.Originally Posted by Gilly
Ohhh thanks for all the pics and infoIt looks lovely. Is the Japanese Maple the red leaves? That is really beautiful. It's a shame, but I don't have room for anything that big in my patch.
The purple "tree" is lilac, and it's a perfect example of that neglect/overgrowth, as it stands (or did before it started falling over!) probably 30 feet high. Normally a tall lilac would be maybe 10 feet or so. This one is quite dark purple, which does make it stand out nicely even at a distance. Often they are pale mauve or white. I'm glad ours is dark -- I like them bestWhat is that purple tree? Again, the colours are so pretty it really stands out. Also, is that ALL lemonbalm by that fence on the left?
