Exactly what I said
Here's my previous post that has a link to an article about it and a clip of the song in it... it got buried a few pages back so I'm not sure how many got to listen to it!

And for your listening pleasure, I found a copy & made a clip of it for you (as to not break any copyright laws, otherwise I'd post the whole thing)... Mairzy Doats

How It should have been:
Dirty Deeds and they're Done Dirt Cheap

How It Sounded:
Dirty Deeds and the Thunder Chief

OK I just read through the nursery rhyme thing and now I remember it hehe, I had no idea what it was. I heard it as

"daisydotes and dozeydotes and little lambs eat ivy
a-skittle-lee-divey doo wouldn't you??" hehe

Shoot.. I have one, If I can remember it..

Creep- The cure

What I heard: "but I'm a freak, I'm a rebel, What the Hell'm I doing here?"

What it IS: "but I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo, What the Hell'm I doing here?"

Though, If I remember there was long ago a punk cover with what I heard...

There are more, but I cant at the moment remember them.

I'm bad for putting in my own lyrics though, because I'm partially deaf in one ear.

This thread is too good! I have to revive it from the dead!

There's this song on the radio (I think it's by Aerosmith) and I always thought he said "suckin' on a booby" but it's really "daddy's little cutie".

The one winged dove one is funny too.. well I thought it was. I love Stevie Nicks!!!

Thanks for bringing this old thread back! So much fun...

When I was a kid, my grandmother sang hymns all the time -- sometimes just singing to herself while cooking... sometimes belting it out for the whole neighborhood while accompanying herself on the organ!
She was a character.
So I grew up hearing those hymns, but I didn't always hear them right. She used to sing...

Bringing in the sheaves
Bringing in the sheaves
We shall come rejoicing,
Bringing in the sheaves

Of course I always thought that was a song about the glories of bringing in the cheese, and wholeheartedly agreed with it. She also sang...

Leaning, leaning
Leaning on the everlasting arms

...but I thought she was "Leaving, leaving / Leaving all the little b*****d's farms."

When Grandma sang, "So I'll cherish the old rugged cross / Till my trophies at last I lay down," I thought she was saying, "So a cherry's the whole rug across / Till my ponies, alas, I lay down."

And Grandma also sang this classic:

Just a closer walk with thee
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea
Daily walking close to thee
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be

But for years I thought it went,

Just a closer walk with thee
Granny, she's a busy bee
Tail is wagging, clothes are free
Let it be , dear Lord, let it be

That would be Ryan's favorite hymn.

My Grandma Myrtle was always singing hymns, too. (Instant wave of nostalgia wafts through...)

I had to read this whole thread, it is hilarious. I am crying tears of laughter. I love Stairway to Heaven and the version in this thread had me in hysterics. I also though the Pearl Jam song said "her legs".

Some classics from my family

Rolling Stones: Angie

Lyrics. Long and drawn out. Angie....Angie....

What my brother heard

I am....JEFF I am ....JEFF.

Eric claption: I shot the sheriff

Lyrics: I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy

What my sister heard

Hot stuff chilli, hanging with the deputy

Creedance Clearwater Revival.

Lyrics: bad moon on the rise

What I thought it said

The bathrooms on the right

Right after my husband and I were married, we heard "Rock and Roll Fantasy" by Bad Company on the radio. Hubby turned to me in all seriousness and said it never made sense to him why they were singing about the Jetsons. I laughed so hard after when I realized that for years, he was hearing: Here come the Jetsons 1-2-3

Actual lyrics:
Here come the jesters 1-2-3

I have two that I remember from childhood:

From Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car"
The lyrics read "I want to be someone, be someone"

I thought they were "I want to pee on someone, pee on someone"

From Bob Marley "Is This Love"
The lyrics read "So, I put my cards on your table" (Or something close)

I thought they were "I drove my car across your table"

Nuh uh...might give me away!
Ok, I love Jimi Hendrix, sooo much. But for the longest time I misheard a part of All Along the Watchtower.

What I THOUGHT he said:
But I was gettin' (rhymes with paid)

What he actually says:
The hour's gettin' late.

Another one is Everclear's Santa Monica

What I thought he said:
I don't want to be your stupid gimp

What he really said:
I don't want to be your stupid game

Hmmm.... well these are a couple I remember:

I thought the Christmas carol "I saw three ships" was about Columbus.

Also the old song by the Police:

I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien,
An Englishman in New York

I thought it ran:
I'm an Indian, I'm an evil Indian,
An Indian in New York

I thought it was about the ghost of a tribal leader haunting the land the Europeans took!

This thread is hysterical.

I've misheard many lyrics over the years, and sometimes I'll keep singing the song that way even after I know the right lyrics. I can't think of any off the top of my head though.

The one I do remember is one my friend misheard when we were kids. She sang Herman's Hermits' song "She's a Must to Avoid" as "She's a Muscular Boy."

My husband is silly and makes up lyrics sometimes (and just plain mishears them a lot too). When we were dating, he broke out with "Daddy sang bass, mama sang fiddle." The lyrics are daddy sang bass, mama sang tenor, but I can't even think of that song now without the mama sang fiddle part.

The other really funny one I read on a web site of misheard lyrics. Some young kid misheard the lyrics to O Canada - the real lyrics, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. The kid heard, O Canada, we stand on cars and freeze.

That's wonderful! You've got a whole historical perspective thing going on there!
Sounds like a great horror movie plot... with a soundtrack by Sting.
