And at least around here (central California), all pounds and other animal recovery agencies routinely scan for chips (in at least some cases, the scanners have been donated by the microchip companies). So around here it's an excellent idea to have companions chipped, it virtually guarantees that if your pet gets lost and is picked up by the city, they'll end up quickly coming back home again!!
Needless to say, *all* of our babes have been chipped.
BTW, I've tried feeling around for the chip, and I've never been able to find it on any of our babes, though it shows up on xrays...
