Here... or There... Hmmm
I know the Outback is really close to the highway, and on Sundays they are open until 9pm and open at 1pm so we should have no problems having a reservation thing for then!

Applebee's is right off of an off ramp. I could not find it's hours for Sundays though, they may need to be called.

Carrabba's is on Saginaw Highway which should be easy to find too. Again couldn't find hours for there.

Which would be easiest for everyone?

I vote for Outback or Applebees.
I think both will have a little bit of everything for people to choose from.

Could I put in a bid for a place with a really good non-smoking section?

Which, I suppose, rears the ugly question -- are we a non-smoking, smoking or mixed group?

It's just that I am highly allergic, so unless I can be well protected from the smoke, I simply can't stay. The alternative, quite literally for me, is a hospital.

Am I being a putz?

No you're being honest!! Also bringing up another consideration we need to have!

I'm a non-smoker, I quit 4 years ago.

What about seeing if either place has a patio dining area? Where the smoking people would be able smoke if necessary without causing hospitalization. I'm a non-smoker, (OK I smoked for like a year or two before) hubby is a quitting smoker (only smokes outside at home now since October. But he wouldn't smoke if it bothered someone.

This sounds like it should work, but it doesn't. (I often have to switch
sides of the street when walking behind a smoker ... some of us are truly
that allergic.)

I've hated this problem my whole life (my parents were chain smokers)
and it never gets easier.

I'd like to come and meet you all, truly. And I truly cannot be around
tobacco smoke. So, if we can work something out where we gather in
a non-smoking venue where the smokers can go off and confab for
tobacco breaks, I'll try to come.

But, here's the thing. I'm not sure this far out that I can make it,
anyway -- it'll be a closer-to-the-time decision for me (my schedule is
not entirely my own.) So I hate to ask for hoop jumping. If it works out,
great. If it's too much trouble, I just won't come this time. I'm willing
to bet there will be future opportunities.

You can't see it, but my face is really red with embarrassment, now.

Don't be embarrised.
I am allergic to tons of things but tobacco smoke is not one of them so I was unaware of the serverity of it with some people. I don't have a problem with a smoke free environment, my hubby won't mind either!
Do you know of any smoke free environments in Lansing that are close to the highway for ease of finding for all of us? Any suggestions would be great and what exactly would we ask for if calling a place to find out about the place? (so we know it really is a clean environment?)

I'm not familiar myself with Lansing, but a friend of a friend lives there. I'll try to get an email address and ask for advice. I'll post if/when I get an answer.

In the meantime, what I do when asking about a venue is to stress the importance of non-smoking for health reasons. Let them know we're talking about asthma and we need to be far, far away from smoke. Any place that has a central bar with smoking will be out by definition (Applebee's, for example.)

You're the greatest!

Not a problem at all. So if the place has a clearly defined and seperated smoking and non-smoking section maybe in another closed off room that would be ok?

Absolutely!

Thanks for the accommodation. My friend forwarded my email to HER friend, and I'll post when I get an answer.

Count me in (current plan)

I MAY be bringing a cat-owner friend. It depends on whether she can rearrange her class schedule. If so, she'd like to come with me.

I'd say the odds of our coming are currently at 75%!
