Hi guys,
my cat Garfield has been constipated the past few weeks and during his initial vet visit she didn't find anything out of the ordinary, gave him an anti inflamatory shot and told me to give him restoralax for a while. Last night we brought him back to the vets because his litterbox was completely clean from the night before. She decided to do an enema and while she was doing it, she felt a mass in his colon. it gushed a bit of blood as well so were thinking that could be the blood he was pooping. The vet has never seen a mass in the colon of a cat before so she needs to do research and will get back to me...
Has anyone everu delt with this issue or something similar? My heart is completely shattered.

I would be very troubled if I took my cat to a vet and she told me that she "had never seen a mass in the colon of a cat before". This does not inspire confidence! Has she never seen a mass in the colon of a cat during her veterinary training? Did they not teach this subject in veterinary school? Is she that young and inexperienced?

If she was this uncertain of feline colon masses, she should have at least referred you to a specialist. I would start with a Vet Internal Medicine specialist. Is there a more comprehensive veterinary facility nearby? At the very least, your cat is going to need further diagnostic tests. He will probably need an abdominal ultrasound, bloodwork, perhaps a biopsy.

Don't panic yet...but you need to be proactive and get to a Vet specialist with more knowledge and experience in this area.

She doesn't seem to be un her twenties, perhaps in her thirties. Hrd to say. She said she had never seen a lump in the colon of a cat before, that it's more common in the small entestine or something of the sort. I'm wondering if there could be a growth due to straining trying to poop? I'm not sure surgery would be an option at this point and my head is going a thousand miles per hour. I recently lost my eldest cat to cancer of the jaw and I cannot bear the thought of losing another one to cancer.

An abdominal mass can be anywhere...colon, small intestine, stomach...or even outside the organ. It may not be malignant, it may be an obstruction of some sort. I would doubt if is is a growth from straining to poop. I would not automatically assume it is cancer. But whatever it is, you need to get to the bottom of this...get a positive diagnosis ASAP.

Update: we put him to sleep for another enema and the vet was able to extract the blocked up feces but she said they weren't very big so the mass is causing a lot of blockage. She still has him under right now and will try to take a small piece for a biopsy. My heart is so broken i just want my baby back home with me

He lived for a few months aftee finding out he had a mass in his colon but eventually the mass got too big and he couldnt poop anymore. I opted out of the surgery due to the uncertainty of the outcome. We had him on an array of medication that seem to have help keep him comfortable and his swelling down. He was pooping well for the last few months which was the main thing we needed from him. I kept him on a wet food diet seeing as that was the easiest to pass through his bowels. I gave him lots of extra love and care until the very end.

I'm SO sorry you have to go through this. And i'm also So sorry I'm only seeing this message now. Please keep me posted with your furbaby. Best of luck to you!
