I adopted a kitten less than one year old, probably 8-12 months. I took her in to get spayed today and mentioned to the vet of a lump I recently felt on her underside. I didn't get to speak to the vet after I picked her up, but he left a note of a mammary tumor to observe.

The lump feels less than an inch in diameter. My initial internet search says cats diagnosed with tumors usually develop them at 10 to 12 years of age. However, when they do, the prognosis is terminal in 9 of 10 cases. I haven't seen any mention of them at such a young age.

I'm not going to see the vet again till next week when the sutures from being spayed come out. Is my research accurate?

not sure, I have never heard of mammary cancer in one so young, it could just be a lump. If the vet was concerned he should have removed it for biopsy while under surgery.
You can visit www.ivis.org and search feline mammary tumors and get lots of useful information.
