I am taking Midori in for what most likely will be the final appt. today with the doctor after a long decline. To make a long story short: we'd been trying unsuccessfully to medicate her for hyper thyroid for the last year and a half. Finally switched from transdermal in the ear which she disliked and was only getting half dose to medicated treats (try this if you have an unpillable hyper-t cat -so much better!) anyways we've been getting her full dose into her for 1 1/2mos. Last week my mom commented that her nails looked really long, time for a trim. She's been sort of hiding upstairs in a spare bedroom, but still eating like a horse. We've been bringing everything to her. Still gets up to use box, but mostly just stays on this bed.
I took one look at the nails and noticed immediately one very infected claw on 3 out of 4 feet! to the vet we went... Got na antibiotic shot and some clorhex for soaking those feet. Initially Vet thought it was bacterial or fungal. so we started with the easy thing -lets try bacteria first and then fungal. discouraged to know she's lost more weight down to 5lbs and change even after the change in hyoer-t meds, so we drew bloodwork...
Midori hates the foot soaking and the feet didn't seem to get better. On tues we got call from Vet. Good news: thyroid levels look normal, bad news the continued wasting and the secondary foot infection look like something systemic. Not good news... 1. Possibly cancer, there is even a lung tumor in cats that goes after the feet like this, or simply her condition which is very fragile has made her vunerable to a secondary infection. 2. Less likely: rare auto-immune disease in cats that attacks bone and soft tissue in cats' feet. Can't even remember the name of this disease. We declined diagnostics on cancer as we will not treat her for it anyways, just make her comfortable. Was going to take her in today for a steroid shot, if its #2 it might help, and if she's got #1 might make her feel better anyways. We swapped out the chlorhex soaks for wipes as she hates it and has been hiding in the closet. Yesterday when I pulled her out for lunch -she still eats ravenously but won't come out for it, she bleed on me -probably from one of the feet. This morning we ganged up on her to do the chlorhex wipes and I noticed that her back feet are worse 2 large infected toes, bubbling puss and black on the ends. She cried the whole time. Big tears down her cheeks. I am suspicious the toes are non-viable even if we could make her better. She's not in a position to do well under anesthesia in her current condition, so I called up the Vet to change the appt. to possible euthanasia. She was clearly suffering this morning.
Aya is stressed out too. She avoids her and going upststairs except to my room and boxes and kibble dish. If I come down smelling like Midori she hisses and attacks. She has always been good at the redirected aggression thing. but she clearly misses her playmate, and is wanting lots of love and tree+cat wand time.
Picture of Midori in better times 2007?. She is 12 more or less now, we really don't know as she came from the Humane society approx. age 4yrs in 2006:
