Wal-Mart carries a brand called Maxximum that's quite good... don't know if there's a kitten version or not. you can compare the ingredients to the Purina to see the difference.

Can you at least call the vet and see if they think it would be something worth bringing the cat into a visit over?

Purina isn't a good food. Neither is Science Diet, which someone else recommended.

If you live by a PetSmart, the affordable decent options are Authority, Nutro Natural, & Nutro Max. At Petco, check out Natural Balance. A good inexpensive food that might be hard to find is Diamond Naturals, but check their website to see if you have it near you (though I'm not sure if they make a kitten version).

Your parents are being selfish. I don't know what their story is, but it would be about $30-40 to have a vet take a look at your kitty. Waiting and not treating it could mean something much more expensive in the near future.
