Yup! He was asking for a cigerette. When I smoked, my friends and I always used that term here in the states.

It was funny to see the reaction on peoples faces in the restaraunts.

"Excuse me, do you have a fag?"
"Sure, here's a fag for you"
"Thank you, I like fags".
