The best cat toy ever made is "DaBird" toy.

The second best is any form of the "Red Bug" i.e. the laser pointer that you can use to get them running after it, climbing the walls, etc. They are everywhere in many forms, at WalMart, at Petco, any variety will do. Price range $2.00 to 5.99 in general.
The other thing is a box, any box, big or small, or a series of boxes. Cats love boxes. Look up "Maru and boxes" on YouTube if you are not familiar with Maru, the Japanese cat who is very funny especially playing with boxes.

I just bought my kitten a Bergen Turbo Scratcher. He absolutely loves it. I live in England but I'm sure Amazon.com have them. I also agree Da Bird is amazing as are rolled up pieces of paper and plastic bottle tops. We have had hours of fun batting them backward and forwards under the kitchen door.
