Many of you have seen my posts in this thread about Cloud & Gizmo. This little kitten I'm posting about was my neighbor's. Here's a little back story...
My neighbor inherited a pregnant cat. About 6 weeks ago she gave birth to 5 kittens. I've been helping out with them since they were born as my neighbor has no experience with pregnant cats or kittens. 2 died within a few days of being born. 2 of the others were doing fine, the third had a severe case of "flat chested kitten syndrome". I had dealt with that before as my cat Pancake had the same defect. I was certain this kitten would be fine.I hadn't seen the kittens since last week. My neighbor called me today to say that the kitten with the flat chest was breathing funny. I suspected it was because of the flat chest. I went over to see the kittens today. All 3 of them had crusted eyes. I cleaned the crust and as expected there was puss in their eyes. All 3 have a URI. But the "flat" one was having alot of difficulty breathing. The combination of the URI and deformed ribs was too much. She didn't make it. I asked if the others were still nursing or if they were weened. She didn't know, so I tried giving them some food. They ate it, so that's a good sign. I told her to try giving them some wet food and to let them eat whenever they want. I also told her to take the remaining 2 kittens to the vet. I wish she had called me sooner, maybe the little kitten could have been saved.
