My 10-year-old cat Willy has had pooping issues often throughout his life since being rescued at age 1. He's had both diarrhea and constipation as I was figuring out his dietary needs and making adjustments over the years.

All has been good for quite a while now, despite some food pickiness. Some threads for background:
  1. Wet/dry food ratio and pooping issues
  2. Dealing with dry-food addiction
But long story short, he is currently on 3:1 wet:dry food, drinking plenty of water, and pooping regularly and normally. Stool looks healthy, not too hard or soft.

However, lately I have been finding little pieces of poop in his sleeping spots. After he gets up from a sleep -- not like a quick nap, but an hours-long, deep sleep -- I will find a single small piece of poop left behind maybe 50% of the time.

It is never messy; it is firm, but does not look like constipated stool. It is often small enough that it dries quickly. But it's puzzling, and a little gross. It's fine when it's in his cat beds because those are washable, but he is sometimes leaving these little pieces of poop on my couch and other places.

It seems like it is coming out in his sleep, and he has no idea. I am constantly checking his usual sleeping spots now, so I know there is nothing there to begin with. It always happens during a deep sleep.

This happened before in his life, but quite a few years ago, when he was around 2-3 years old, but then went away and never happened again. He would have been on 100% dry food at the time, which is much different from his current diet.

Any thoughts?

Could he have some degree of fecal incontannance? Could be age related or possably spinal. Compression of the nerves comes to mind.
Thanks. I know nothing about the condition you described... but he has a vet visit coming up. I posted here to get ideas to ask my vet about.

Is he a bigger kitty? Can he clean himself easily? Do you happen to notice if it is after he has gone to the bathroom? Like maybe a little bit is sticking to him when he goes potty and when he lays down it comes off of him?
When is his vet appointment?

He is slightly overweight, which has been a recurring issue throughout his life, but it has never gotten worse than "slightly." He is about 10.75 lbs right now, while his ideal weight is closer to 10 lbs.

Suspected arthritis, but he still cleans himself just fine. I watch him do it, and I've been checking his behind frequently. It always looks spotless.

This article actually mentions finding pieces of poop in a cat's bed.
Thanks for the link.

Thankfully, I guess, he is not presenting any of the accompanying symptoms listed in that article. Like there's no redness/inflammation/discharge from the anus, and he is not grooming down there any more than usual. And there are no unusual litter box behaviors; no other pooping outside the box at all.

That at least gives me hope it's not as serious as it could be.

His vet appointment is in a couple of weeks. It had to be rescheduled more than once, and scheduling is always an issue, but my vet is a cat specialist whom I trust.

Ok I would just keep a journal of how often it is occurring this way when he has his appointment you will know exactly how often it is happening so you can let the vet know. I am hoping it isn't fecal incontinence. By the sound of it though he doesn't have the symptoms.. just a little poop where he lays occasionally.. how fluffy is Willy back there like around his anus and the back of his legs and tail? I ask because even though Gabby is short hair she is a little fluffier back there...(Im sorry Gabby, mommy is giving out your personal secrets.. ) lol
