My 10-year-old cat Willy has had pooping issues often throughout his life since being rescued at age 1. He's had both diarrhea and constipation as I was figuring out his dietary needs and making adjustments over the years.
All has been good for quite a while now, despite some food pickiness. Some threads for background:
But long story short, he is currently on 3:1 wet:dry food, drinking plenty of water, and pooping regularly and normally. Stool looks healthy, not too hard or soft.
However, lately I have been finding little pieces of poop in his sleeping spots. After he gets up from a sleep -- not like a quick nap, but an hours-long, deep sleep -- I will find a single small piece of poop left behind maybe 50% of the time.
It is never messy; it is firm, but does not look like constipated stool. It is often small enough that it dries quickly. But it's puzzling, and a little gross. It's fine when it's in his cat beds because those are washable, but he is sometimes leaving these little pieces of poop on my couch and other places.
It seems like it is coming out in his sleep, and he has no idea. I am constantly checking his usual sleeping spots now, so I know there is nothing there to begin with. It always happens during a deep sleep.
This happened before in his life, but quite a few years ago, when he was around 2-3 years old, but then went away and never happened again. He would have been on 100% dry food at the time, which is much different from his current diet.
Any thoughts?
