Why can't you use clumping litter for kittens?  Also, in the long run, is clumping litter more economical than non-clumping litter?

I have 6 5-week-old kittens and two adults, and I'm going through almost 40 pounds of litter a week.  I'm sure it's only going to get worse.  It seems so wasteful!

Thanks for your advice!

Kittens may try to eat their litter and if it clumps in the stomachs, they'll get sick. Not sure of the economical difference between clumping and non-clumping. I have six inside cat's and I use about 300 pounds of litter every six weeks in five boxes. I use clumping clay and it does bother me that it goes into the landfill.

You might want to check out the forum on using chicken feed (crumbles) as litter. It is biodegradable and from what I hear, is cheaper than clay. I am seriously thinking about trying that.
