Something ive learned from experience is that if your cat is urinating in the wrong places, it helps if his/her best friend in cleaning and changing the litter box. Their scent is left behind, and the cat can detect it and is more comfortable using the litter box. Also, a special brand of cat litter called "Cat Attract" is available. It is designed especially for cats who don't like to use the litter box. The name says it all. It is the only brand my cat will actually go in and it is very effective.
