So it’s been over a year now since Katherine arrived and she is by far the center of my world. As she’s gone from that awkward not really a kitten or a cat phase into full blown cat I’ve also enjoyed seeing how her personality has changed. For example the first several months of living with her she was curious, opened drawers, barely meowed, was very affectionate, hated being alone, and would be aggressive towards strange things like knocks on the door or a door bell. She’d get poofy and growl, then go defend her turf from the noise. It used to be that she’d greet me when I came home every day and while she didn’t always want to be petted she always had to be in the same room with someone. She also used to eat her can and you had about a 50/50 shot she’d puke it up. The longer you waited after she asked for it the higher the chance was she’d puke it up. Even if she asked at 1am. There was a few weeks in there were I slept downstairs just to make sure she had company when she ate so she wouldn’t puke. Lesson learned is I need a nicer recliner.
She’s now fully 10 pounds of full adult cat and her personality has changed a little. She enjoys more time alone, in another room. She no longer greats me at the door but will come and say hello at her leisure. That’s usually when she wakes up as she seems to sleep a lot more these days and wants to play a lot less these days. It’s also harder to hold her interests. When it comes to strange noises she’s more likely to growl and then hide behind the couch then get poofy and defend. That response seems reserved now only for alley cats she sees through the window. The other day she watched some ravens on a roof across the street with wonder and when it flew by the house she got real low. She no longer pukes her can anymore, and if you’re late feeding her you may get a little more “I’m cute have a rub and a meow” but nothing more.
Don’t get me wrong, she’s still my sweet kitten. She still enjoys sitting on my lap, talks to me, follows me around the house to an extent, goes Adventure Cating with me in the back yard. But she’s changed a bit. The most obvious change is her size. She’s much bigger now. One of the things we do every morning is sit on the couch and watch the news with breakfast. As she sits she gets petted and scrunched. She likes to rub her head on my arm is I slow down or stop and she likes to roll into my hand as I scratch. The more she’s into it, the more she rolls. The problem is either she’ll roll right off to the floor, or roll onto her back with is the prelude to Katherine Defense Mode. Don’t get me wrong, she can lay on her back a while and just enjoy a scrinch but you have to be very, very careful where and how you touch her. On her back it’s really easy to move your hand or arm by the front of her face and that’s when attack mode activates. Suddenly her front paws grab you in a vise, the back paws kick and the jaws start chewing. Her claws are always retracted, but on the back feet sometimes it just happens even if the front are safe. The issue is those fangs. Man the chewing…. A bite or a nip would be one thing but the chewing…. it doesn’t hurt more than say a welt from a rubber band that’s been snapped at you, but still. Today’s breakfast she drew blood. And the funny thing is after the whole thing is over she’ll flipped over, you can touch her again and she’s calm down really really fast and she’s back to being her normal kitty self…wandering off to a window for bird watching. Meanwhile, I’m left conflicted between the welt on my arm and the knowledge that kitty is happy.

As she’s gone from that awkward not really a kitten or a cat phase into full blown cat I’ve also enjoyed seeing how her personality has changed. For example the first several months of living with her she was curious, opened drawers, barely meowed, was very affectionate, hated being alone, and would be aggressive towards strange things like knocks on the door or a door bell. She’d get poofy and growl, then go defend her turf from the noise. It used to be that she’d greet me when I came home every day and while she didn’t always want to be petted she always had to be in the same room with someone. She also used to eat her can and you had about a 50/50 shot she’d puke it up. The longer you waited after she asked for it the higher the chance was she’d puke it up. Even if she asked at 1am. There was a few weeks in there were I slept downstairs just to make sure she had company when she ate so she wouldn’t puke. Lesson learned is I need a nicer recliner.
She’s now fully 10 pounds of full adult cat and her personality has changed a little. She enjoys more time alone, in another room. She no longer greats me at the door but will come and say hello at her leisure. That’s usually when she wakes up as she seems to sleep a lot more these days and wants to play a lot less these days. It’s also harder to hold her interests. When it comes to strange noises she’s more likely to growl and then hide behind the couch then get poofy and defend. That response seems reserved now only for alley cats she sees through the window. The other day she watched some ravens on a roof across the street with wonder and when it flew by the house she got real low. She no longer pukes her can anymore, and if you’re late feeding her you may get a little more “I’m cute have a rub and a meow” but nothing more.
Don’t get me wrong, she’s still my sweet kitten. She still enjoys sitting on my lap, talks to me, follows me around the house to an extent, goes Adventure Cating with me in the back yard. But she’s changed a bit. The most obvious change is her size. She’s much bigger now. One of the things we do every morning is sit on the couch and watch the news with breakfast. As she sits she gets petted and scrunched. She likes to rub her head on my arm is I slow down or stop and she likes to roll into my hand as I scratch. The more she’s into it, the more she rolls. The problem is either she’ll roll right off to the floor, or roll onto her back with is the prelude to Katherine Defense Mode. Don’t get me wrong, she can lay on her back a while and just enjoy a scrinch but you have to be very, very careful where and how you touch her. On her back it’s really easy to move your hand or arm by the front of her face and that’s when attack mode activates. Suddenly her front paws grab you in a vise, the back paws kick and the jaws start chewing. Her claws are always retracted, but on the back feet sometimes it just happens even if the front are safe. The issue is those fangs. Man the chewing…. A bite or a nip would be one thing but the chewing…. it doesn’t hurt more than say a welt from a rubber band that’s been snapped at you, but still. Today’s breakfast she drew blood. And the funny thing is after the whole thing is over she’ll flipped over, you can touch her again and she’s calm down really really fast and she’s back to being her normal kitty self…wandering off to a window for bird watching. Meanwhile, I’m left conflicted between the welt on my arm and the knowledge that kitty is happy.
