Leukemia Shots - quick info please

Two of my cats tested postive for leukemia when they were 5 years old. They were also vaccinated for leukemia for the past 3 years but it didn't stop them from getting the disease. I understand the vaccine only 80% effected.

I'm so sorry to hear that!

yes, I've heard that also, that it's only around 85% effective, but I guess some protection is better than none? I've also heard differing reports on if the vaccine itself will cause a cat to test positive. Leukemia is a bad bad disease

The Leukemia vaccine will not cause a cat to test positive, it is the FIV vaccine that could cause a positive result because the vaccine and the test are using/testing for the same strain.

Here's the statement on the FIV vaccine from the AAFP:

Here's the statemtent on FeLV/FIV testing, on page 4 it states that "the FeLV vaccination will not induce positive test results". It's a really good reference in regards to testing.
