Kitten peeing in our bed?

Hi everyone,

We've got two 12 week old kittens that are brothers, and when they came to us at just under 8 weeks they both seemed fine with litter training. One of them (we think it's only one as we've never caught the other doing anything) has developed a nasty habit of peeing in our bed during the night.

We've got two litter trays, one upstairs and one downstairs. As with our previous cats we did a complete change twice a week and scooped the poo out everyday. We did wonder if the one brother had a particular problem with a soiled tray so started doing complete changes of both trays everyday (which is costing a fortune!).

We've got a Fellaway plugin downstairs and just bought a spray which we're going to use a little around our own mattress.

We have tried emailing the woman we bought them from, in order to ask what litter she used, in case that is the issue, and how she litter trained them, so we can reinforce it with Rupert, but sadly never received a response - it appears that she is uninterested now that she has the money.

Hoping that maybe someone else has got some ideas and can tell us where we're going wrong!

Huge thanks!

Hi,

We use Catsan litter; the litter tray was in the bedroom, as there isn't anywhere on the landing to put it.  We have moved it downstairs at the moment, as we needed to completely clean and Feliway spray the mattress so the kittens needed to be locked out of the bedroom - do you think they have adopted the entire room as a toilet?  I know that one litter tray should be upstairs and one downstairs, but am starting to worry about the wisdom of putting it in the bedroom if they have decided that it extends to the entire room!

So that's a clumping clay litter, right? Can't you just scoop out all pee clumps and the poop a couple times a day and top up with a bit of fresh litter rather than completely changing the whole lot?

If you can find some Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter, you might want to give that a try.

Cats would not normally generalize litter box activities to the entire room it's kept in, so I think something else is going on here. Could be they need a bigger box, or more than one box upstairs, or the box needs to be in a better location? Might take some trial and error and possibly even a vet visit to sort it all out but I wish you luck!
