Keeping 8-month kitten off table and counters

Zack is a rambunctious ragdoll who insists on jumping up on our kitchen table.  He used to jump on the counters but we laid tinfoil along the top and he did break the habit.  However, it didn't work with the table.  He seems to do it for spite.  Any tried and true suggestions?

Also, he has energy to burn (even though we had him neutered).  Playing with him just makes him more hyper!  My husband is losing patience with him and I want to keep peace in the household!

This is messy but I am using shelf paper sticky side up with my new cat.  i know about carpet runners but don't have any.
