So Katherine is fitting in nicely I suppose. She’s enjoys bird watching from windows deeply, and sitting at the screen of the sliding glass door and listening. When she’s upstairs she likes to sit in the window of the loft and look out. She dislikes people near the house. Lawn guys mowing, people walking down the street past the windows, the garbage truck all get watched intensely if not a thorough growled at. When someone first comes in the door she comes down to investigate. She’s no longer big and poofy when she arrives, and only on the increasingly rare occasion is there a growl before she sees who’s entered. Upon entering any hostile noises are quickly changed to a pathetic “merow”. As if to say, “oh, it’s you”.

She’s someone who likes to be near people and not necessarily with people. For example you can’t go from upstairs to downstairs without a feline escort. You can’t brush your teeth without a counter inspector. You can’t get another cup of coffee without someone to sit beneath the sink. Of the three couch cushions on the couch downstairs she liked to sit on the middle cushion no one else uses. She’s  enjoys sprawling out on the floor just beneath the stairs where she’s got a good view of the stair case, the kitchen, her food dish, the sliding glass door, and the living. In short, right dab smack in the middle of everywhere. Upstairs she likes to lay down just in front of the television where she’s got a good view of both bedrooms and the bathroom. When she sleeps at night she likes to sleep at the end of the bed.

Should you bother her, or bother her too much, in any of these area you’re likely to be nipped. She has no problems with turning around and just nibbling on someone’s hand who’s messing with her. If the front paws are near she’ll gladly give you a slap of the initial nip wasn’t enough. She’s even been known to turn the nip into light chewing, or to grab your hand with her front paws as she bites and proceeds to thrash away with her back feet. Her bites are never hard or painful, though maybe a little off putting. It’s her claws that can be painful. Doesn’t matter if she’s taking a swing, holding you down, or merely kneading on your jeans.

In each case however she’s always near you, and not with you. Should you be the only person in the house she’s definitely your shadow. Should someone else be in the house, she just has to be near one of you. She’ll take turns deciding who it is. In the event you’re the only person, and you’ve bothered her too much, she’ll slink off somewhere far from you but in the same room. Some place she can still keep an eye on you but not necessarily be bothered by you. She’ll sit there and pout with this partially annoyed and partially pathetic look on her face. She may pout for the better part of 30 minutes before deciding to give you another go. If you leave the room at this point and just ignore the cat, she’ll still follow you. She’ll just do it at a distance, and it’ll be a few minutes before she does decide to follow. Through usually her pouting sessions are shorter this way.

When Katherine does want to be with you it’s all very forceful. There have been several strategic attempts to trip someone down a flight of stairs. Always standing on the same stair if not running up ahead a stair or two and stopping. Cutting off your path. She doesn’t like sitting on your lap but rather likes to try and lay across your chest and collar bone. This can be done vertically with the back end of the cat on your lap, or horizontally if she thinks she can get away with it going from left to right. It’s a luck of the draw which side gets what but I have noticed more times she like her head on the left. Unless she’s laying vertical then she likes to crawl up your right side. If you’re reclined her vertical crawl will require the back end of the cat to be standing, while the front of the cat sits so she stays level. In the event you’re lying down, well all bets are off. She’s likely to be laying so one back foot is draped off you as if you were just a rumbly couch. And it’s far more likely the end of the cat near your face won’t be hers.

Katherine being with you is a very forceful affair. She’s on you and in your face so it’s hard to watch television. You must pet the cat and do it now. If you’re on a tablet device or reading the paper she’ll gladly come between you and it and just sit. She’s been known to try and sniff any plate or dish you bring to the couch regardless of how far you stretch away from cat. She just stretches closer to it. If there’s a bird outside she will gladly climb over and around you to get a better view. In the morning she’s a meowing, purring, cute machine when she wants her can. During the night she spends most of her time by herself, so it’s hard to get up and use the bathroom middle of the night without suddenly being accompanied by a noisy cat. She stays so close to you at this point you can’t shut the door without her being in the bathroom. It’s as if you abandoned her alone in the tundra of northern Alaska and she’s just making sure never have the chance to do it again. It seems the only way to really get her from crawling all over you, using you as a highway system, and so on is to just ignore her. Only then will she either leave, or sit calmly on your lap.

As much as the common notion is my fluffy kitty is somehow this cute chatter box companion who loves me, the truth of the matter if really far more dark. This animal is really a 4 legged killing machine and she enjoys that fact very much. While she hasn’t completely lost interest for the red laser light she won’t chase it as much anymore. Instead she’s prone to chasing mousies up and down stairs when you throw them. Sometimes, she’ll even bring them back. If you throw it to the top stair she’ll slowly wrestle with it all the way back down the stairs. Another game she likes to play with is her mousie we put on a string. The string is about 15 feet long. As I pull the string the mousie makes his way up the stairs bouncing on each stair, through rooms, into my room, and finally on the bed. All the while Katherine cases the mouse, pounces it, catches it and it gets away, and finally she finds it docile on my bed. Here she’ll look around for a moment, grab the mousie in her jaws and carry it off quickly. When she does this her tail shoots straight up and I swear there’s a prideful bounce in her step. It’s almost prancing. She’ll make her way back down the stairs before the game is repeated. I can usually do this about 10 times before she’s actively panting with exhaustion before she picks up the mousie again. The more I continue at that point, the less distance she ends up carrying the mousie off too each time she gets it.

It’s notable that Katherine can be a very mouthy cat when she wants to be. And she has several distinct calls. Everything from the clicking chirps she makes as she’s honing in on a mousie or red dot. To pathetic cute meows. To what seem like screams or cries. She’s also very curious and very smart. I find that she’ll try to get into a room no matter how many times you tell her no. She’ll try walking on tables or climbing up book cases no matter how many times you chase her off.  The various cabinet doors and drawers of the house have on occasion been found opened. If you show her something new like a drawer that can be opened, sooner or later she’ll be back there trying to open it. In some ways she’s a very bull headed and head strong personality. When she wants something, or doesn’t want something, she’s not likely to change her mind or give up on it. For example the other day I gave her a cat treat. She was so excited for it she practically ate it from between my fingers. When she was done she came back and tried muscling me for me. Her body language was clear she wasn’t looking for play or to be stroked. She wanted the goods now where were they?! After leaving the room I found the cat treat bag on the floor covered in teeth and claw marks. At one point she even picked it up and took it across the room. The treats have since been put in thick Tupperware.

There are ways however of tempering her strong willed, teeth baring, arm nibbling attitude. The first method is her collar. Other than some initially wiggling and pouting she’ll wear a collar just find. She won’t try and take it off and she’ll still sit on furniture, visit, get food, etc., with one on. However the moment you put one on her, suddenly the cute factor is dialed up a notch. The mouthiness goes down and the strong will goes down to “I’m a cute cat please love me”. The same con game that got me to adopt her at Animal Control all the way down to the occasionally lightly pawing at you if she wants something. As if asking permission. You can up the ante even further by putting on her harness. Again other than some wiggling there’s no fight to put it on or take it off. While on I’ve seen her visit the dinner dish, be social, groom herself. So make no mistake the harness by no means limits her ability to do anything no hurts the creature. I have noticed however from a personality stand point while in the harness her jumping seems, half hearted. She’s more inclined to try and crawl or climb than jump. If you pick her up she’s less resistant and if you quickly leave and come back she’s far more likely to be where you left her waiting for you. Her cute factor goes up and her curiosity goes down. In fact while in the harness she seems far more content to just lay on your lap. She’ll even roll over, sleep, and dream. She spent the better part of an afternoon in the harness when I first purchased it and she spent most of that time sleeping on my lap. It’s as if putting a little kitty clothing on her knocks miss bossy boots down a peg and suddenly the good girl showman has to come out.

So there you have it. I don’t think Katherine if overly attached to any one individual. And I don’t think she “loves” anyone. For the most part I think she’s decided the house is her territory and she shares it with other large animals. She may even see those large animals as just bigger cats. I have been groomed a time or two, and a “hello” shoulder thrust into my shins. Katherine seems to feel that these other creatures she lives with are mostly harmless and willing to share food. Though I think she’s figured out who is more harmless than others, and who is more susceptible to manipulation than others. Over all think she’s an opportunist, a con artist, an explorer, a killer, and a roommate.

The question is; how much of this is just normal CATitude, and how much of this is just Tortitude? There’s also a certain amount of, 1 year old kitten there. Though I swear since I got her she’s gotten bigger, and fuller. She’s less kitten like and more cat like now.

Funny!  A lot of writing, composed in a humorous way. ;-)

But in the end, sounds pretty normal cat to me.  I know people like to attribute behaviors to coat patterns, and I'm not sure if I really buy it.  But I will say just to clarify my outlook of it seeming pretty normal that I spent a decent chunk of my life with a torbie colored cat so if there's anything to tortitude I experienced it for 17 years.  I currently have black cats.  They are different in personality from Amber but I don't attribute it to their coloring.
