I just got him - he's a barn kitten but we're keeping him indoors for now. I noticed this and it looked weird to me... when I zoom in it looks like bugs. I haven't had cats before and I just want to make sure everything is okay. We have another kitten (picture 2 and 3) but I couldn't get a good picture. Please help, super concerned.

Hello - it appears that possibly the umbilical cord was cut or bitten by mama too closely.

Edit; my apologies for an inaccurate post.

Is that its butt? Are you talking about the brown things? Are they moving?

That's his butt.

It looks a bit dirty, but no cause for concern. You can clean him up with either a cotton wool ball or a hand-towel dipped in warm water. Kittens usually clean their own butts, but if he's only just been taken away from his mother he may not be sure how to take care of himself yet.

However, barn cats almost always have parasites such as intestinal worms, fleas or ear mites. A vet check is definitely a good idea. Keep them away from any other pets, get the vet to check and treat them for parasites, give them their initial vaccines and book a neuter appointment for when the kittens are about 5 months old.

If you get cats vaccinated and spayed/neutered within the first 6 months you save yourself a fortune on vet and cleaning bills in the long run.
