Hi all! Would love to hear your thoughts on our situation and we want to figure out whether this is normal and just a phase, or this is likely to be an ongoing thing…
So we recently adopted a 15-week old kitten who was likely feral and found by rescue with his brothers when he was about 7 weeks. We want our other cat to has some friends. So the kitten is very playful and has typical energy as a kitten. His foster said he plays a lot with his brothers but they are not too bonded.
On the other hand, we have a gentle, confident but cautious 2 yo at home whom we adopted from a shelter when he was almost 1. No prior history was know but he got bullied by the previous owner’s dog; so he likely doesn’t like dogs. But nobody knows whether he’ll ge along with cat. He seems to be bored by himself and we thought he’d enjoy some company.
So we got the new kitten home, did some separation, did the whole Jackson galaxy introduction thing for a bit. Both seem to be curious with one another. No hissing or growling at any point. So we progressed to let them out. They don’t seem to be too aggressive with each other. So here comes the question - my older cat is very curious about the kitten - sniffling, playing, chasing all that cat stuff; but interesting, the kitten showed little to none interest in our older cat. He doesn’t sniffle, doesn’t stare, sometimes chases him back but mostly just walk past by him. He sometimes screams and hides when the older cat is playing with him for too much but he comes out. Occasionally he initiates some fist bumps and play but pretty rare. So…. Is this normal??? I thought kittens would be the one annoying the older cat but it’s totally the other way around at this moment… the kitten seems a lot of attention from us but not necessarily from his fellow “brother”. Is it because he’s not too socialized with adult cats? We are so confused….

When the resident cat is young and playful, sometimes they are a bit over-enthusiastic with a kitten, and the kitten might run and hide during play or seek to disengage. There can be a bit of discomfort given the size difference if the adult is very enthusiastic -- seems to be something on the level of a head noogie or indian sunburn from a big brother to a little brother, if those references make any sense to you. If the kitten comes right back and acts like nothing happened in a few minutes, and initiates sometimes, then everything is fine, which is what you have. All good, all normal. As the kitten gets bigger and gets more confident with the two year old, play should become more equal and the kitten should become more into it.

That's reassuring to know. Yes.... The size difference is pretty big. Hahaha and yes, after googling, those references definitely make sense now, and seems accurate. Thank you! Can't wait for the play to become equal.... Haha
