Introducing a puppy to a resident cat

**NOTE: We aren't sure if we are getting a Sheltie puppy yet, it is possibility, just wanting to know as more info as possible. **

So, we are thinking of getting a Shetland Sheepdog, which will be a puppy, when she arrives here. 

What is the best & most efficient to do a introduce the a Puppy to our cat?

In my experience it also helps to know your cat's attitude towards dogs. When I adopted my dachsund mix puppy 5 years ago, my cats were pretty cool about it. They kept their distance until I was able to train the dog to properly behave. Today both species enjoy exploring the garden together but do their own thing. Cats climb the trees and chase whatever is lurking in the bushes and the dog plays catch and fetch with me or barks at the birds (maybe it's a warning to the birdies to keep away from the kitties 

 )
