BACKGROUND:
We have 2 cats already...one a 15 year old outdoor/indoor and the other is a 14 month old indoor only cat. We are soon to have a 4 month old kitten which will be indoor only and so be a readily available playmate to the younger one.
I have read up on the generally accepted protocol for bringing in a new cat to a household already having a cat but I have a few Qs if you don't mind:
INTRODUCTION Plan
"Safe Room" is a laundry room on the main floor with dimensions of about 5 foot by 10 foot (there is room for a temporary placed litter box and food and water.)
My partner thinks this room is too small for one to play in with the cat.
How long is it feasible to use such a small room while introductions are still on-going? (See on for more details)
We do see how to go with the introductions with our existing indoor only cat but how does the procedure change, if any, if one also has an indoor/outdoor cat? In the summer, in the good weather this cat is outside for the greater part of every day and night. So given this cat will be outdoors so much, coupled with its very curmudgeony temperament there is no doubt that it will take much longer for this particular introduction. So looking ahead when hopefully the new kitten and our indoor only younger cat are okay together do I put the kitten in its "safe room" whenever the older cat comes in i.e. ignore the fact the other cat is fine with the kitten? And so the formal introduction continues until it works for both existing cats?
Any advice is appreciated.
