St. Johns Wart is good. Its used for depresion and mellowing out moods but it also helps with insomnia. When I was going through some VERY stressfull moments last year I started taking it. Not only did it help with the stress it calmed me down enough to sleep. I take it every day now. I also found the breathing techniques used in yoga helped.
Like others have said insomnia is a side effect of something else. He needs to get to the root of the problem.. Most of the time we don't know what it is but talking about things can help bring it out. Have him go to a sleep specialist. They usually try to get to tje root of things more than a doctors. Doctors believe in drugs. Its better to mask the problem than solve it.
I forgot to add, a lot of times it can be a lack of vitamin D. The only way to get the daily recomended amout is sun exposure. Doctors recomend no more and no less than 15 minutes a day with no sun block. There are over the counter versions but they don't work as well. That is why people who live in places like alaska expieriance insomnia and depression. The lack of sun for 6 months is no good.
